What You Can Learn From Asking Questions

Let me tell you about Lori Highby. She’s smart and knows how to ask the right questions. She came to one of my speaking events and introduced herself. About a week later, she followed up. Followup is KEY!

She asked if she could have a half-hour of my time to interview me for her Social Capitol Podcast. Of course, I was honored she asked, and said yes. I must tell you that asking the questions is easier than answering them.

So true. When others know you truly care about them, they will care about you.

Here are some of the great questions she asked:

What’s the one thing that all businesses and non-profits should remember before contacting the media?

Ask the “So what?” question. Put yourself in the place of the audience and figure out, “Why would I care?”

“What would make me want to read, listen, or watch?”

Think about the information you can share to provide value for the audience. If you’re having a walk or a run, can you teach the audience about how to train properly? Or can you help them choose the right equipment for these types of events?

How To Increase The Chance of Earning A Media Interview

Teach something that people want to know and you’ll have a greater chance of getting a reporter or TV producer to call.

How do you stay in front of your network or community?

“I think I always want to be of service to them so if I see something that I think, ‘Oh this is cool, I think so-and-so would like this’, I send it to them.”

Just like I’m doing now. 🙂 I’m letting my network know about Lori’s network. See, she’s smart.

To hear the answers to these other questions:

  • How to help people get over the fear of public speaking?
  • Digital networking or traditional networking?
  • If you could go back 20 years, what would you tell yourself to do, more or less, of regarding your career?
  • What book are you reading right now?

Any final words of advice for our listeners??

“Be a good person, that’s really all you have to do. Just hold other people higher than yourself sometimes.”
