Why “It” is Not a Word.

Writing

Of course it’s a word but you shouldn’t use “it” while writing a letter to your boss or a client or the media.

As a broadcaster, we use “it” all the time. We write like people talk. Let’s face it, “it” is one of the least of society’s conversational crimes…you know. 🙂

Although after proudly turning in my 190 page book thinking I was mostly done, the publisher took one look at my first sentence and told me to go back to my laptop.

My first sentence was “You know you want it.” She said, “What do you mean?” I replied, “You know success, publicity… It’s conversational.”

She understood but quickly made me realize when you’re writing on real paper, the reader needs to know exactly what you mean.

For the next week, Control + F (for finding search words) became my friend. I found “it” all over the place. She was right.

So check your copy, take the time to use descriptive words and help the reader understand what you truly mean.

Now don’t get me started on the word “that”. 🙂
