As a reporter, I remember the email asking me to sign up for “H.A.R.O.” (Help A Reporter Out). It’s a service that puts reporters in touch with sources to help them with their stories.
I thought it was intriguing but since people wrote to me and Contact 6 to solve their problems, I never had a shortage of people to interview. I didn’t sign up.
That was then, this is now.
As a publicity coach, H.A.R.O. is a great tool for my clients looking to get media coverage and to be sources for reporters!
You can pick and choose what story will be best for what you have to share. You’ll receive emails three times a day with quick headlines to see if you’re a match. Kinda of like Tinder for reporters but not. 😊
And H.A.R.O. (Help A Reporter Out) works!
A client of mine, Gary Nosacek, has a son who suffered a serious concussion in high school in 2011 and is still dealing with the repercussions. Gary just sent me this message after being contacted by a reporter who is writing a story about concussions and youth sports.
I love being a problem-solver still, and you should too. Think about how your opinion, your information, or your product can help others and sign up for H.A.R.O. Usually, the reporters will be contributors to online magazines, trade magazines, or bloggers but I have seen requests from local and national news reporters too.
Remember, just like answering any call or email from the news media, if you’re not quick, you won’t be picked. Act fast for publicity!
Once you are picked, do you know how to give the reporter a great interview and soundbite? Call me for help in marketing your message to the media.
