Why You Shouldn’t Have a Baby on a Holiday

20161124_074756

Happy Thanksgiving! If you’re about to have a baby today, I’m sorry. Sorry for the child since they’ll have to share their special day with the holiday and sorry for you for what’s about to happen.

Now I know there is nothing you can do. The stuffing has to come out.

While I’m sure the experience will be amazing, you probably won’t get the same customer service as the Mom who delivers on a normal work day. Just sayin’.

Why? Hospitals are on holiday too.

Eleven years ago my little Turkey boy was on his way. We had the birthing plan all mapped out. My husband was going to stay up by my face. Talking to me. Fanning me. Feeding me peeled grapes. I don’t care but he was not suppose to go down there.

The plan was written on my chart. I had filled out paperwork!

But with only one nurse on duty for Thanksgiving, when the time came she told my husband, “I need you to come down here and grab her other leg.” WHHHAAATTTT??!!

A bead of sweat rolled off my lip when I quickly said, “Hey you’re suppose to stay up here.” My husband basically said this  “whole not looking thing” was on YOUR plan, I really don’t care. He knew he needed to help.

In the end, we had a beautiful little boy and my husband says seeing him come out was an experience he’ll never forget. Ahhh. Still thinking about it grosses me out. I know it’s beautiful and yada yada.

Welcome to the world my little man! A place where your plan is just a plan and not real life. We can fill out all the paperwork we want but “going with the flow” will carry you a lot further.

So on this Thanksgiving, I give thanks to God for being able to be a mom. At age 35 at the time, he ended up being my “only and everything I could ask for” child.

I give thanks for a life that never goes completely to the plan.

And I give thanks for a life where the surprises are even better.
